Faculty FAQs on Coursepacks

What are course packs?

Course packs are compilations of articles, cases, textbook chapters, and other copyrighted and non-copyrighted materials. Course packs can take the place of an expensive textbook or simply provide supplemental course readings when a traditional textbook is required or preferred. XanEdu CoursePacks provide an affordable, flexible, and copyright-cleared service to provide students with high-quality custom course materials.

Who is XanEdu?

XanEdu is the leading provider of course packs in higher education. XanEdu compiles faculty-selected content, assures all copyrights are cleared, and prices and packages the material as print or digital editions.

What kind of course packs does XanEdu provide?

  • Print

    — Print CoursePacks offer a table of contents, pagination and bibliography as well as the content selected by the faculty. A variety of production options are available including color and custom covers, and comb, staple, three-hole, tape, or perfect binding.

  • Digital

    — Available directly from the XanEdu website, digital CoursePacks are accessed by students online using a pre-purchased registration code. Students can read items online or selectively print hardcopy from their personal computer. Digital CoursePacks can be enhanced with a range of multimedia content options.

  • Digital Plus Print

    — XanEdu's most complete solution combines a traditional print format with the added flexibility of digital CoursePacks. Each printed CoursePack contains an access code for the accompanying online materials. This hybrid format adds great value to programs for which students are distance learners, or for students who learn both on campus and online.

What content and formats can be included in XanEdu CoursePacks?

Practically anything can be included in a XanEdu CoursePack.

  • Business cases
  • Newspaper and magazine articles
  • Out-of-print books
  • Instructors' own material
  • Scholarly journal articles
  • Course syllabi, handouts, & teaching notes
  • Textbook chapters
  • Video and Multimedia Cases
  • Much more!

How are custom CoursePacks created?

  • Faculty send the reading list or bibliography for the course to their XanEdu account team, who then build the CoursePack and request any necessary copyright permissions; OR
  • Faculty use XanEdu's Web-based tools and extensive content databases to enter citations and/or add content from our premium business content, XanEdu Collections, or resources provided by your library or OhioLINK. Visit http://www.xanedu.com/coursepacks/control-center.shtml for additional information.

What copyright services does XanEdu provide?

XanEdu provides risk-free course material copyright solutions and indemnifies all customers against any damages that arise as a result of copyright infringement claims. XanEdu has pioneered unique Web-based tools that offer faculty and distribution partners real-time access to valuable tracking updates including content royalty pricing and copyright permission status. Copyright protected content can be easily added to a CoursePack or Copley Custom Textbook by providing a XanEdu team member with the desired citations, course reading list or bibliography, or by browsing and adding content from the XanEdu Collections and resources provided by your library or OhioLINK, XanEdu's copyright team will:

  • Research and identify the copyright holder
  • Submit and follow-up on permissions requests
  • Manage the royalty payment and tracking process

Permissions are cleared for all copyrighted items in each CoursePack every term. XanEdu has a 98% success rate for clearing permissions, which take an average of two to four weeks. Please note that some publishers take longer to respond to requests, especially during peak business times, and in some instances, the copyright clearance and production process can take up to six weeks. (See the FAQ on turnaround time).

What is the turnaround time for XanEdu CoursePacks?

For new CoursePack orders, the compilation, copyright clearance and packaging process takes an average of two to four weeks, though in rare circumstances the process can take longer. Re-adoptions and packs without copyrighted materials can be turned around as quickly as one week. XanEdu delivers 98% of ALL CoursePacks on-time and offers customers the unique ability to track the status of individual CoursePacks or orders through the faculty member’s My XanEdu or distributor Control Center accounts. (see the FAQ on Copyright Clearance).

How do students purchase XanEdu CoursePacks?

XanEdu CoursePacks can be made available for students to purchase through a campus or local bookstore, online at http://www.xanedu.com, or through a bulk purchase by an institution or department. Online materials can even be made available through some learning management systems such as Blackboard and WebCT.

What are the value-added elements of the sponsorship of the University System of Ohio?

Course packs can be an even more attractive option for Ohio faculty to consider:

  • XanEdu will work with OhioLINK to eliminate duplicate royalties where CoursePack-selected materials are currently licensed by OhioLINK. Using OhioLINK licensed resources could save students an additional 10-15% on course pack prices.
  • XanEdu will provide direct assistance to faculty from Transfer Assurance Guideline (TAG) communities to create standard course packs or components of course packs. Multi-campus use may reduce the cost to students by reducing repetitive customization. If any of these TAG sponsored course packs are adopted on at least three Ohio campuses, an additional 10% discount will apply. XanEdu will provide OBR with lists of TAG course packs for inclusion on the University System of Ohio web site to help promote their availability. XanEdu will consolidate the list of these TAG course packs on their faculty online site.

Who do faculty and administrators contact at XanEdu to create Coursepacks?

Ohio faculty should contact Tyler Steben at 734-302-6571 (tsteben@napc.com) for direct assistance and collaboration with XanEdu on course pack creation.
